La Academia de Hollywood ha publicado la lista de los 159 largometrajes documentales que han sido inscritos para los premios Oscar de 2020 y que cumplen con las condiciones para hacerlo (haber ganado algún premio en un festival de cine o haber sido enviados a la Academia como representación de su país para la categoría de Mejor película en lengua extranjera), aunque algunos aún han de tener estreno comercial en Los Ángeles o Nueva York para entrar en la lista definitiva. La lista de los 15 finalistas se darán a conocer el 16 de diciembre, y de esos saldrán los nominados finales, que se conocerán con el resto el día 13 de enero de 2020.
Entre estos 159, cabe mencionar Apollo 11, que acaba de recibir el premio al mejor documental en los Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, y American Factory, que empató con They shall not grow old, de Peter Jackson, en la categoría de mejor director en estos mismos premios. El documental de Peter Jackson no ha sido inscrito para los Oscar. También figuran Diego Maradona, la cinta de Asif Kapadia sobre el gran futbolista argentino; For Sama, que ganó el premio L’oeil d’Or en el último Festival de Cannes; o Rolling Thunder Revue, el documental de Martin Scorsese sobre el músico Bob Dylan.
