Un total de 166 han sido los inscritos en la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias cinematográficas de Hollywood para competir en la categoría de Mejor largometraje documental en los próximos Oscar. Algunos de ellos aún no se han estrenado en Los Ángeles o Nueva York, por lo que podrían caerse de la lista final. Por primera vez en la historia de estos premios, se incluyen como elegibles los documentales que han ganado un premio en algún festival o los que han sido enviados por su país para competir en la categoría de Mejor película de habla no inglesa. Su inclusión en la lista de mejor documental les hace elegibles en otras categorías, hasta en la de Mejor película.
Los seleccionados finales se anunciarán el día 17 de diciembre, y los nominados, el 22 de enero, con el resto de categorías. La gala de los 91º Oscar se celebrará el 24 de febrero en el Teatro Dolby de Hollywood.
