La serie histórica de Netflix The Crown, sobre la reina Isabel II, es la más nominada para los British Academy Television Awards, con un total de cinco menciones: mejor serie de drama, mejor actriz protagonista (Claire Foy), mejor actriz de reparto (Vanessa Kirby) y dos de mejor actor de reparto para John Lithgow y Jared Harris. Por detrás quedan Fleabag y Happy Valley, con tres; War and Peace y El infiltrado, ambas con gran éxito de crítica y público sólo recibieron una nominación.
Benedict Cumberbatch, por su parte, logra este año su sexta nominación en los Bafta con una por su interpretación de Ricardo III en The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses. Le acompañan en la categoría Adeel Akhtar, Babou Ceesay y Robbie Coltrane. En la categoría de mejor actriz, acompañan a Claire Foy Jodie Comer, Nikki Amuka-Bird y Sarah Lancashire.
La Academia no ha ignorado el éxito internacional de Stranger Things, serie a la que ha incluido en las nominaciones a la mejor producción internacional junto a The Night Of, The People vs O.J.Simpson: American Crime Story y Transparent.
Anunciaron las nominaciones la actriz Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum) y el actor Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch). La ceremonia tendrá lugar el 14 de mayo en el Royal Festival Hall de Londres, con la presentadora de televisión Sue Perkins como maestra de ceremonias.
